GORHAM, ME - Karen Elizabeth (Fenton) Sweeney of Gorham, ME and formerly of Presque Isle, ME passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the age of 83 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House surrounded by her loving family.
Karen was born January 27, 1935 in Richmond, Michigan to Kenneth and Katherine (Watson) Fenton. She attended Richmond High and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education at Eastern Michigan University. She taught elementary school in Michigan, Ohio and finally at Gouldville Elementary School in Presque Isle, ME where she taught fifth grade for many years and continued to volunteer in the same classrooms after her retirement in 1990.
She was particularly proud that many of the students she taught in elementary school returned to visit her through their high school years and afterwards, to express their appreciation for her service to them in their earlier years. Karen was also particularly fond of the many dogs and cats she included in her life, particularly her small dogs, which were always by her side. She also enjoyed visiting with her family in Southern Maine.
Karen is predeceased by her husband William E Sweeney Sr. of Presque Isle, ME and her twin brother Keith Fenton of Richmond, MI. She leaves behind her children Matthew Davies of Westbrook, ME, Leslie A Nee and partner Jerry Farina of Gorham, ME and Dana K Davies and husband Tim Shelley of Gray, ME. Karen also leaves behind her grandchildren Jasmine Smith, Brianna Nee, Shannon Nee and Fiona Nee, all of Gorham, ME, as well as her great-grandchildren Ella and Calvin Stuart of Gorham, ME.
Per Karen’s wishes, there will be a private graveside service attended by family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Karen’s life on Sunday July 22, 2018 at one o’clock at the home of Leslie Nee, 10 Beverly Lane, Gorham, ME.
