Scarborough- Joyce “Ma” Mae Richards, 83, passed away on February 15, 2024. The daughter of Guy and Dorothy (Emery) Hawes she was born in Carmel ME on October 21, 1940. She attended local schools and graduated from Carmel High School.
She met and married David Richards and they had three children. They moved to Portland and had another daughter. After raising their children she trained to become a Certified Nurses’ Assistant, and worked at the Jewish Home, and then Seaside Nursing Home. She and David, decided to purchase the Tory Hill Café and ran it for several years. Still wanting to work she started working at the Dollar Tree until she retired at the age of seventy-five.
She enjoyed playing board and card games with family. She was very competitive especially in Skip-Bo and Yahtzee. She also enjoyed doing puzzles in her free time. She never missed a Celtics game, and was a loyal fan sporting team attire.
She was predeceased by her husband Dave of over 60 years, her daughter Pam, her beloved dog Sally, and many of her siblings.
She is survived by her son David of Scarborough, her daughter Patty of Portland, son-in-law Thom of South Portland and daughter Tammy of Portland, her grandchildren Vanessa, Chelsea, Miles, Paris, Joey and Bella, and great grandchildren, Maleyah, Kai, Lavani, Audriana, and Kingston. She is also survived by her brother Guy Hawes Jr. and his wife Naomi, and her sister Janet Hawes.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 4-6 PM at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
