Joy F. Milligan, age 57 passed away June 29, 2013 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. S he was born in Rumford, Maine July 30, 1955 a daughter of the late James Thomas and Elfreda Hackett Farrell. She attended schools there graduating from Rumford High School in 1973. She then attended and graduated from the University of Maine Farmington in 1977. She married John A. Milligan on July 30, 1977.
For approximately 30 years, Joy ran a business, Baskets of Joy, from her home, frequently donating baskets and other home decor items to various charitable causes. She was a parishioner and Eucharistic minister at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church. Joy was deeply committed to her family, both immediate and extended family. She especially enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren whom she adored.
Joy was an avid reader who could often be seen enjoying a good book in her lounge chair on the end of the dock at the family camp in Weld, Maine. She loved the sun, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends there. She also enjoyed walking the family's Golden Retrievers at Kettle Cove and Crescent Beach. Joy spent summers working as the hostess at the Kawanhee Inn, Weld Maine. She enjoyed meeting new friends and old at the Inn. She had a true passion for event planning, including weddings hosted by the Inn.
She is survived by her husband, John A. Milligan of Cape Elizabeth, 3 sons, John A. Milligan Jr. of Cape Elizabeth, Joshua F.
Milligan and his wife Erica of Kennebunk and Adam J. Milligan and his wife Taylor of Oceanside, Ca., 1 sister, Jennifer Coughlin of Bangor, 3 brothers, Dennis Farrell of Rumford, Thomas Farrell of Kennebunk and Kevin Farrell of So. Portland. She also leaves 3 grandchildren, Mason J. Milligan of Oceanside,Ca., Grady K. Milligan and Elyse A. Milligan both of Kennebunk.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and physical/occupational therapists on the medical team for their hard work and care, and the generous support of family, friends, and neighbors.
Relatives and friends may call at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodfords St., Portland on Tuesday July 2 from 4-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday July 3 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, 8 Two Lights Rd., Cape Elizabeth. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth. If desired, contributions may be made in Joy's memory to Glioblastoma Research (Defeat GBM Research Collaborative at www.braintumor.org).
