John Francis Flaherty

Scarborough-John Francis Flaherty of Westbrook died on November 13th at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a brief illness. He was born in Portland, Maine on May 10, 1939, the son of Patrick and Delia Folan Flaherty. John attended Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961. He worked at General Electric in South Portland for many years and retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1999.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Thomas J. Flaherty and Bartley M. Flaherty.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth (Clarke) Flaherty, his son and daughter-in-law, Edward J. and Lynn K. Flaherty, and adored grandson, Cameron Flaherty, of Medford, MA, three sisters, Mary Napolitano and husband Joseph of Portland, Anne Gwinn of Scarborough, Brigid Murphy and husband Thomas of Old Orchard Beach, one brother, Patrick M. Flaherty of Portland and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to express its deep gratitude to the nursing staff at the Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center and to the staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
