Portland – Joanna Sinnett passed away peacefully in the company of family on October 21, 2023. Joanna was born on December 26, 1937, in Portland, Maine. She was the daughter of Henry Jackson Sinnett and Catherine Clarke.
Joanna lived in Portland all her life. She graduated from Oak Grove School in Vassalboro and attended Earlham College in Indiana.
Some of Joanna’s fondest memories were attending camp at T-Ledge on Orr’s Island, where she became a counselor; and visiting friends and family on Bailey Island and at Winslow Park. She also enjoyed her time at Camp Moy-Mo-Da-Yo. At these camps, she developed a lifelong passion for swimming. Joanna loved animals, especially horses and dogs, and was an accomplished equestrian.
Joanna enjoyed working at the election polls in Portland. She also read a great deal and was interested in New Age Writings and the Baha’i faith. Despite her strong beliefs, she was respectful of the views of others. She had an amazing memory and could relate information about places and people from long ago.
Joanna was brought up solely by her father, and as her father aged, she became a very dedicated and loving caregiver to him until he passed at age 99. She is survived by distant cousins and caring friends.
Joanna’s final clear words were, “I feel like an unfinished melody.” She truly was a lifelong learner.
Per Joanna’s wishes, a “camp circle”, representing her camp days, will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Steven Ave. Portland on Thursday, November 2 at 1:30 In case of inclement weather, please contact Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home at 207-775-3763 or check their website listed below.
