A beloved mother, grandmother and art teacher paints her last. She passed away quietly on Monday, February 19, 2024. Janice taught Art in the Scarborough School system from 1971 to 1989 and is fondly remembered by many of her students. When her daughters were small they thought she knew everything. She would take them on walks and hikes and she would point out plants and birds and animals and tell them everything she know about those subjects.
She loved camping and spending time with family. A couple of summers she rented a camp on Big Sebago. She took Heather and Debby to Pine Point beach and Kettle Cove often in the summer. They would spend whole days on the beach. When the girls were older she took them on “Women's Lib” camping trips (no boys allowed) each summer to various campgrounds in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. One summer the family took a cross country road trip to visit friends in North Dakota. It wasn't until years later that she confessed to her children that while everyone slept one night she drove 3 hours in the wrong direction.
Janice was a fantastic Mimi to her grandkids and great-grandkids. Taking them on camping trips and sleep overs, going on bike rides, and was always there for special events. She was very much loved and will be deeply missed. She is survived by her daughters, Heather Richards and Debra Gallant, her grandchildren Alycia Niles, Joe Gallant, Melody Richards, Cory Gallant and Matthew Richards, and by her great-grandchildren Noah Gallant, Autumn Niles, Jaxson Gato, Andrew Niles, Ryker Gallant and Joey Gallant.
A private celebration of Janice's life will be held at a later date.
