Scarborough-James P. Kilmartin age 76 of Portland died Thursday May 3, 2012 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. James was born in Portland, Maine on February 24, 1936 the son of Matthew and Euphrasia O’Connell Kilmartin. He attended Portland schools. James faithfully served our country in the US Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. After military service, James worked as a welder and welder instructor. He retired from S.D. Warren of Westbrook in August of 1999 after 38 years. James married Katherine Blake and they spent 45 years together in marriage. He was a voracious reader and spent many afternoons on his porch reading or doing crossword puzzles. People enjoyed walking by his flower boxes displayed on his porch. James had a lifelong passion for baseball. He played baseball in high school, in the US Marine Corps, and later in the first fast pitch softball league of Greater Portland. He was an assistant coach for Harold T. Andrews Legion baseball and little league #2. James was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. He was also a devoted fan of the Portland Seadogs. From their first opening day, he spent many happy hours at Hadlock Field with his longtime friend Howard Parkhurst. James was always very proud of his Irish Heritage. The Kilmartin family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House and to Hospice of Southern Maine for their compassion and caregiving.
James was predeceased by his parents and his brother Joe Kilmartin.
He is survived by his wife of Kathy, his children Kevin and Dennis Kilmartin, Kellie Selberg and husband Phil, brother Mike and sister in law Anne, brother in law Peter and wife Jill, sister in law Patty Blake, nieces Cathy Krusiec and her husband Paul, Laura Kilmartin, Ashleigh Blake, nephew Chris Blake, great nephews Matthew and Michael, and a very dear cousin Faye Allen.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation Monday May 7 from 4 to 7 P.M. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Portland at 10:00AM. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
