Portland- Mae McMillan, 103, left the earth peacefully in her sleep on October 17, 2011. The daughter of Walter McMillan and Maggie (Miller) McMillan she was born January 20, 1908 in the Archibald Settlement in New Brunswick Canada. She moved to the United States in 1929 and proudly became a citizen. She was a devoted worker for Eugene Baxter, the brother of Governor Percival Baxter, and for the Watkins family, Hotel Everett and Oak Street Hotel. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, the Rebecca’s and the Samaritan’s Organization, where she made lifelong friendships because of her constant positive attitude. After retiring Mae was on the governing board of 75 State Street until she was 93 years old. Mae was predeceased by her sister and best friend Thelma McMillan Dyer, brother in law Horace, niece Ruth, Ed Russell and Barbara Dyer. Auntie Mae is survived by her nephew Donald E. Dyer, nieces Dorothy Russell, Elizabeth Lawrence and husband John, who all loved her dearly. Her calm and cheerful presence will be missed by her cousins, grandnephews, grandnieces, and their spouses who thought of her as a second grandmother and by their children, spouses and the next generation. Mae was loved and cared for like family by the wonderful staff at 75 State Street. There will committal service on November 5, 2011 at 1:30 PM at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. Portland, followed by a celebration of Mae’s life from 2:00 -4:00 PM at 75 State Street in the Adam’s Center.
