Mr. New was born July 24, 1917 in Tallapoosa, Georgia to Henry and Vashti (Fields) New. He grew up a country boy in rural Georgia where he loved to fish and hunt. He loved the woods and had an affinity to nature and all the things in it. He spent many hours walking the woods of Georgia and would often bring home rabbit, squirrel, or fish for the supper table. While in his late teens he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp helping to build roads and state parks in the Great Smokey Mountains. In 1939 he joined the US Army and while stationed in New York he met and married his wife of fifty years, Elnora (Davidson) New. Mr. New was a World War II Veteran and served in Europe. After the war he was honorably discharged and tried civilian life again, but after a few months he re-enlisted in the US Air Force. He served his country honorably for 24 years retiring from the military in 1964. He and his family moved to Maine and he was employed as a Chef for the Lafayette Hotel and the Osteopathic Hospital until his retirement in 1980.
Mr. New was a longtime member of the Woodfords Congregational Church as well as a member of Triangle Masonic Lodge #1, F&A.M.
Mr. New was an avid reader, Red Sox fan and collector of gadgets and “Stuff”.
He lived independently until July 2009 when due to declining health he took up residence at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. It was here that he lived and died among his fellow members of the greatest generation.
Besides his wife Elnora he was predeceased by his brother Reuben. He is survived by four sons, Harry Jr. of Washburn, ME, David of Standish, ME, Richard and Randall of Portland, ME; his brother, Robert New of Lithia Springs, GA, his sister Lola Marsh of Madison, AL and his sister Lenora Kilbourne of Atlanta, GA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Thursday June 2, 2011 from 6-8 PM at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30PM by Triangle Masonic Lodge #1, Funeral Services will be held on Friday June 3, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Graveside committal services and interment with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.
