PORTLAND – Harold Malcolm Sprague, 87, of Portland, Maine passed away peacefully on February 18, 2022. He was born July 5, 1934 in Waldoboro, Maine, the son of Harold A. Sprague and Florence (Larrabee) McKown.
Harold graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, then joined the Navy and the National Guard. Upon leaving the military, Harold graduated from Syracuse University.
Harold worked at the United States Postal Service as a supervisor and retired after 34 years of dutiful service. When not working, Harold enjoyed exercise, billiards, gardening, and travel. In the years after retiring, Harold and his wife, Emily, travelled the world to destinations including Europe, Asia, Russia, and the South Pacific. He also spent a great deal of his time working out at World Gym and coordinating the pool league at the Woodfords Club, where he was a longtime member.
Harold’s passions included food and people. He loved a good lobster and a favorite past time was his trips to Harbor Fish Market to find the fresh catch of the day. He loved a good glass of wine, and enjoyed sitting on his back deck in the summer and having a drink while chatting with his many friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Emily, a son Eric Sprague and his wife Yana, and his beloved granddaughters, Elke and Anda of Eden, Utah.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, February 25, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Jones, Rich, and Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A celebration of life will be held at the Woodfords Club immediately following the service.
