Scarborough, ME – George E. Herbert, 81, of Portland died Sunday, February 14, 2010 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a brief illness. He was the husband of Billie M. (Brown) Herbert.
He was born in Portland, ME on March 28, 1928 the youngest of seven children to the late Thomas & Eleanor (Alexander) Herbert. He attended local area schools and graduated from Portland High School as a member of the graduating class of 1945.
He served his county during WWII in the US Navy and married his wife Billie on February 23, 1952.
George served for a short time as a fire fighter for the city of Portland and later went to work for the Portland Press Herald. He retired in 1990 as a proof reader.
He enjoyed candlepin bowling and was a member of several leagues. He also loved his camp in Freeman Township, where one of his favorite pastimes was mowing his lawn.
Besides his loving wife of 58 years he is survived by his four children, Karen A. Ferrante and her husband Daniel of Standish, Darlene J. Bowman and her husband Michael of Wrenshall, MN, George E. Herbert II and his wife Antoinette of Limerick, ME and Kathlene G. Kamen and her husband Jerome of Lakeville, MN. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland, ME.
Burial will be private.
