Falmouth - Garrett Verrill Cormier born in Portland, Maine on Oct 30, 1993, passed away Thursday evening due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
Garrett was a very charismatic young man who loved to spend time with his family and friends. He had a knack for making up his own words and sayings such as “skillage”, meaning I did it well, and “freezing hot” that he saved for very warm summer days. Holidays and vacations were especially important to Garrett because of his spiritual nature and his involvement in First Lutheran youth group. His eager anticipation of family traditions kept many of them in practice year after year.
Garrett was extremely social, a trait attributed to his Dad. His dancing blue eyes and crooked grin won over many hearts. From his Mom, Garrett developed a deep compassion for others. Many times while sharing stories around the dinner table, he would recount about needing to stop and help some elderly person. Then he could catch up with his friends to get on with lunch. Garrett loved everybody. Children and seniors especially found him endearing. He was always proud to gain a new friend.
Boy Scouts played a big role in Garrett's youth. He would spend hours preparing for the Pinewood Derby and earning badges. This is just one of the many reason he became such an avid outdoorsman. He greatly looked forward to hunting and fishing seasons. Some special spots were by Scarborough Downs fields, Grant's Farm, Eustis, Little Sebago and Long Pond. His used motor boat, which he saved for and purchased himself, was one of his most treasured possessions. Receiving his hunter safety certificate was a cherished moment as bookwork was somewhat sometimes a challenge for Garrett. Being active and outdoors were Garrett's passions. A fire in the backyard pit was one of his favorite pastimes. Camouflage and pink were his colors.
Garrett was also a sports enthusiast. At Portland High School, he was involved with snowboarding, skiing, wrestling, football, lacrosse, and had plans to learn how to golf and play tennis this summer. Garrett was a true dare devil on any kind of wheels, including bikes, skates, and boards. Along with his antics went many emergency trips to the ER for broken, bruised, sprained this and that’s and broken teeth.
Garrett was always on the move. He also had the moves which made him known in family circles as a dancing man. Garrett had a series of shakes and jiggles that his family fondly dubbed “Doing the Garrett” often an entire dance floor would suddenly “Do the Garrett.”
Garrett brought true happiness and love to all who knew him. He spent sixteen years carving a forever spot in each heart he touched. His joyful presence will be dearly missed but his spirit will stay one with us forever.
Garrett attended conservation camp with his best friend, Henry and his brother Patrick for five plus years. These were some of his most treasured experiences.
Garrett is survived by his parents; Lauren M. Cormier of Portland and Joseph J. Cormier of Saco, along with his brother; Patrick R. Cormier, his sister; Taylor Cormier and his step-mother; Leatrice Cormier. Garrett is also survived by his beloved maternal grandmother; Joyce Hilliard of Portland, several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins, his girlfriend; Moie Aaskov and many dear friends. LoLa and Prince loved him too.
