Frederick J. Foley Jr. died peacefully at home on January 17, 2013. He was born on March 14, 1926 in Portland, ME; the son of Frederick J. Foley and Margaret Sheehan Foley. He attended Cheverus High School and Bowdoin College.
Fred was very active in the family business, Community Oil Company, which started with one filling station and developed into a large chain. In 1970, Community Oil Company was sold to Standard Oil. Fred then embarked in a career developing real estate in Maine and New Hampshire. Initially his construction was of the U.S. Post Office buildings, but he later expanded his construction to other uses. He successfully initiated what became a long-standing relationship with Hannaford, building and leasing supermarket stores throughout Maine.
Fred was an avid hunter and traveler. He hunted big game in Africa and other locations world-wide. Closer to home, he hunted moose and deer in Maine and Canada. His travels took him to more places than can be listed. Fred’s other interests included golf. He was a member for many years of the Portland Country Club, the Prout’s Neck golf Club, often patiently sharing a slow round with non-golfing friends. He was also a member of the Cumberland Club. Fred also greatly enjoyed opera and encouraged friends to share his passion.
Above all, Fred appreciated the love, care and attention of his four loving daughters and their families, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his four daughters, Kathleen Denniston and husband Brackett of Fairfield, CT; Johanna Rogowski and husband Ronald of Naples, FL; Martha Webster, and husband Peter of New York City; and Frederica Hennessey of Parkland, FL. He is also survived by his eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Care for Fred and his family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland, ME.
