Frank S. Nash, Jr. 88, Portland, passed away on February 4, 2017 at Seaside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Frank, the oldest of seven children, was born in Camden, ME to Frank S. Nash, Sr. and Ruth (Crockett) Nash on March 9, 1928.
In 1938, he moved to Portland and in his senior year at Portland High School, he quit school and joined the Navy in March 1945. While stationed in Norfolk, VA, he met and married the “love of his life”, Jennie Miller of Belfast, ME in 1950 who was also stationed in Norfolk. They went on to have two daughters. Frank went on and served as a Recruit Company Commander at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL. He then started his “sea” career in which he served aboard the USS Dealey (DE 1006), the USS Johnston (DD 821), the USS J.W. Thomason (DD760), and the USS Potawatomi (ATF 109) (not in that order) as the ships’ COOK. He received the Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, Navy Occupation Ribbon, China Service Ribbon, United Nations Ribbon and the Korean Service Ribbon. He ended his 20 year service as a Navy Recruiter in Portland, ME. During this time, he went back to Portland High School and graduated with the class of 1965.
During the 1960s, Frank and Jennie owned and operated a take-out restaurant in Prides Corner, Westbrook, ME called “The Hi-Neighbor Lunch. While Frank finished his career in the Navy, Jennie ran the business. After he retired from the Navy, he was employed by the Saco School Department as the School Lunch Director. During this time, he co-founded the Maine School Lunch Program. After leaving the Saco School Department, he worked for the Cape Elizabeth School Department. In the summer months of 1969 – 1972 (when schools were closed), Frank, his wife and daughter worked at the Alford Lake Girls Camp as the Cook, the Baker and a kitchen helper. He then went on to National Medical Care, South Ridge Living Center, Sanford Marriott Saga, Greenwood Center, Schooner Estates, and the Hawthorne House as the Dietary Supervisor/Manager.
Frank was a 60+ year member of Fraternity Lodge #6 IOOF in Portland, ME where he held the office of Noble Grand three times. He was also a 60+ year member of the Fleet Reserve Association, a member of the Hospital, Institution and Educational Food Service Society and the Dietary Managers Association.
His greatest love was getting together with family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, bowling, drawing and painting, and playing his favorite game, Bingo.
Frank is predeceased by his wife Jennie, infant daughter Pamela, father Frank Nash, Sr., mother Ruth Crockett Nash, brothers William Nash (and wife Naomi) and George Nash (and wife Demetria), sisters Natalie Noyes (and husband Gene), Virginia Thompson, and Sally Laite (and husband Keryn) and stepmothers Christine Gilman Nash and Violet Nash.
He is survived by his daughter Koren of West Cumberland, his brother Harold Crockett and wife Pamela of Camden, Priscilla Crockett (an aunt) of Rockport, step-brother Warren Gilman of Westbrook, nieces, nephews, and a large extended family and friends.
To the staff of Seaside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Portland, Koren would like to thank each and every person there for the care and love they provided to her father. Seaside was his home and everyone treated him with friendship, respect and dignity. She would also like to thank the staff at Compassus Hospice & Palliative Care for providing care for her father and support for her.
Services will be held at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodfords Street, Portland, ME on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A funeral service for family and friends will begin at 2:00pm followed by a time of visiting and reminiscing. Graveside services will be at Mt. View Cemetery in Camden, ME in the spring.
