Westbrook - Eunice Barbara Aaskov, 94, formerly of Slemons Road and Codman Street in Portland passed away peacefully after a long illness on July 9, 2011 at Springbrook Nursing Care Facility in Westbrook.
Barbara was born on June 16, 1917 in Westbrook, Maine. She was the only child of John Herrick and Berniece McKeague. She attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1935. She married Ralph Emerson Aaskov, the love of her life, on April 12, 1941. During World War II, she moved to Colorado to be with Ralph while he was trained in photography for duty in China with the Flying Tigers.
Barbara was a stay-at-home mom while her 3 children were growing up. In later years, she worked at Pratt Abbott and retired from Unum. She enjoyed her summer camps on Watchic Lake and Little Sebago and delighted in family times, especially during the holidays. She enjoyed wintering in St. Petersburg, Florida with her husband of 46 years. Ralph died in 1987. She continued traveling to Florida after his death. She loved square dancing, shuffle boarding, knitting, traveling, reading, and lunching with many friends, especially the “Golden Girls.”
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, recently receiving her 50 year pin. She was also a member of the Central Square Baptist Church in Portland.
Mrs. Aaskov is survived by her three children Karen A. Witham and her husband Robert of Windham, Alison A. Gaudin of Portland, and David W. Aaskov and his wife Vicki of Windham. She is survived by 7 grandchildren - Amy Cunniffe, Marcy Rogers, Laurie Cournoyer, Krista Garrity, Megan Gaudin, Melissa Bartz, and David J. Aaskov as well as 11 great-grandchildren

The family will welcome friends Wednesday, July 13th from 9-10 a.m. followed by a celebration of life service at 10 a.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. The family will attend a private Graveside Service in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery where Barbara will be laid to rest beside her husband, Ralph.
