Portland- Elizabeth D. Smith, 90, longtime resident of North School on Congress St., passed away suddenly on July 9, 2017 in Portland. She was born in Portland a daughter of Sinclair and Mary (Burke) Belfontaine. She was the last surviving child of twelve children. In 1946, she married Edward O. Smith in Portland. They began raising a family and lived in the Munjoy Hill area their whole lives. Elizabeth used to knit 100 sets of hats and mittens yearly for 26 years for the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. She volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce in Portland. She received the Governors Volunteer Award for 20 consecutive years and received the Presidents Volunteer Award from George Bush Jr. She made afghans for every child, grandchild and great-grandchild in her family. She enjoyed making puzzles and doing word searches.
She was pre-deceased by her husband in 2002; her son, Edward O. Smith Jr. in 1961.
She is survived by her sons, William T. of Freeport, Michael F. and his wife Sonia of Florida, Frank R. and his wife Catherine of Gorham; daughters, Norma Scribner and her husband Charles of Falmouth, Claire DeDominicis and her husband William of TN; grandchildren, Edward Scribner of Chicago, Scott Smith of Windham, Timothy Smith of FL, Chantel Shipe of MI, David DeDominicis of TN, Patricia Kidwell of Gorham, Charlotte Smith of Windham and Frank Smith Jr. of Gorham; great-grandchildren, Michael, Kaitlyn, Danae and Helena Smith, Lauren Shipe, Brianna, Chloe, Paige and Brooke DeDominicis.
Friends and relatives are invited to a time of visitation from 4-7 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Jones Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland, where a funeral will be held at 10 am on Friday, July 14th. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland. A light reception will follow at Jones Rich & Barnes.
