FALMOUTH - David Norman Hilton (Dave), 84, of Falmouth, Maine, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth, surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness. He was born in Wiscasset, ME on February 11, 1933, a son of Norman Hilton and Katherine (Jackson) Hilton Slattery.
David graduated from Greely Institute in Cumberland. He later married Almeda F. Geyer on October 30, 1952 in Falmouth, Maine. From 1955-1957, he was enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Korea following the war.
David was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Family always came first. He was an honest and hardworking man. He was a skilled craftsman and there was little he could not build, fix or repair. He worked in the construction field his entire life before retiring from Brown Homes. For those who worked both for him and with him, they all benefitted greatly from his skill and expertise. He was always ready to offer advice and assistance; one only needed to ask.
David took great pride in doing a job well and was very meticulous in ensuring a quality product was the end result, even if it took more than one attempt. He had a very strong work ethic that he passed along to his family. Throughout life, he was very active and always found time for fun activities. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, skiing, windsurfing, hunting, boating, gardening and reading.
During their retirement, David and Almeda enjoyed traveling and have special and fond memories of their trips to Hawaii, Bermuda, and London, England. David and Almeda also wintered in Ocala, FL for several years.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Ann Hilton.
David is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Almeda F. Hilton of Falmouth; his five children, David N Hilton Jr. of Chester, NH and his wife Laureen Kelly Hilton, Susan H Arnold of Portland, ME, and her husband John (Jay) E Arnold, Michael C Hilton of Limington, ME and his wife Jan M Hilton, Mark R Hilton of Jacksonville FL and his wife Claire Wackendorf Hilton, Steven L Hilton of Windham, ME and his long-time girlfriend Wendy S Ricker. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Jason Hilton, Jamie Arnold, Joel Arnold, Kristina Hilton Luce, Jill Hilton Rickett, Ashley Hilton Martin, Janessa Hilton, Tess Hilton Perry, Jeffrey Hilton, Beau Hilton, Evan Hilton and eleven great-grandchildren, Hailey Rickett, Lorelei Hilton, Aliza Rickett, John (Jack) Arnold, Mariska Hilton, Thaddeus (Tad) Martin, Luke Perry, Guy Martin, Jordan Arnold, Reed Perry, Riley Luce; and brother, John Hilton. He is also survived by many sisters and brothers-in law, and several nieces and nephews.
The family appreciates the loving and professional care David received while under the care of Sedgewood Commons staff, especially Allison and Jessica.
Per his wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A private memorial service for David will be held at 11 am on Friday, February 9, 2018 at Jones Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A spring interment with military honors will be held at Blanchard Cemetery in Falmouth.
