.Charles Starr Hadley of Cape Elizabeth, age 81, died peacefully at the Gosnell Hospice Home of Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA). Charles was born in Manhattan and raised in Pelham, NY where he graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 1953. He graduated from Middlebury(VT) College with a BA in Economics and from the University of Maine with a Masters of Business Administration degree. He served with the United States Army of Occupation in Germany. He joined General Motors Acceptance Corporation as a Field Representative in Rutland , VT in 1960. He progressed through several positions with GMAC in Rutland, Bangor and Portland, retiring as Sales Manager in 1992. Following his General Motors retirement, Charles became a firearms dealer selling firearms to collectors all over the country. Some of his memberships and affiliations were the National Rifle Association, The Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, The Smith and Wesson Collectors Association, The Colt Collectors Association, The USM1 Carbine Club, The USM1 Garand Collectors Association and The Spurwink Rod & Gun Club.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, Clifton and Esther Hadley and his brother Peter Hadley of Greenwich, CT.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sally Gilblair Hadley, his daughters Erika King of Topsham, Deborah Baron of Pittston , Melodie Brown of Falmouth, his sons; John Michael Poirier of Durham, Mark Poirier of Portland and his sister Caroline Wood of Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Charles had 8 grandchildren; Candace, Sarah, Benjamin, Jesse, Samuel, Derek, James and Hadley as well as seven nieces and nephews.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he maintained his sense of humor to the end. “That” he often said, “has made all the difference.”
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Spurwink Rod & Gun Club of Cape Elizabeth or The Gosnell Hospice Home of Scarborough.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the Maine Medical Center and the Gosnell Hospice Home for the extraordinary care that Charley received during his final week with us.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Friday July 15, 2016 at 1:00P.M. in the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland, Maine.
