Carl was born on February 7, 1944 in Augusta, Maine to Silas and Frances Barter. He grew up in Augusta and played football and basketball at Cony High School. After high school, Carl attended Lyndon State College, where he met and fell in love with his wife Roseanne. He took pride in the fact that his college basketball team at Lyndon State was inducted into the New England basketball hall of fame in 2005.
Upon returning to Maine, Carl worked in the office furniture and supply business, first at Loring, Short and Harmon, and then at Roberts Office Supply before leaving to start his own business. He opened Corporate Environments in Portland in April of 1988. He surrounded himself with family at Corporate Environments, including his oldest daughter Beth Whaley, his wife Rose and eventually his son in law Jim Towne. Carl retired when he sold his business to Office Resources in April of 2012.
Carl loved football and he and Rose were Patriots season ticket holders. In addition, he coached high school football at Cape Elizabeth and Deering High School, and thoroughly enjoyed working with the young men he met during this time. He also took pride in the fact that both of his daughters are huge Patriots fans.
The most important thing to Carl was his family. He was a proud father and grandfather and he was never shy about sharing his love and affection for his family. He was loving and sensitive and made sure that those who were important to him knew it.
He most enjoyed being with his beloved Rose, and spending time in their cottage on Long Island, Maine where he and Rose created a second family of loving friends.
Carl was predeceased by his parents, Silas and Frances Barter, and his father in law Charlie Spencer.
Besides his loving wife of 50 years, Rose, of Portland, he leaves 2 daughters; Beth Whaley and husband Matt, of South Portland, Ellen Towne and husband Jim, of Kennebunk, and five grandchildren, Taylor, Jack, Marisa, Jake and Alex.
