Portland-Carlene Goldman, a lifelong Portland resident, died unexpectedly Wednesday. She was 68. Carlene was the only child of her late parents, Carleton L. Ray and the former Anna Doria DeGruchy, of Portland. She was a member of Portland High School’s class of 1960. After attending Katharine Gibbs secretarial school in Boston, she worked as a secretary at law firm Verrill Dana from 1962 to 1964. While raising three young children, Carlene went back to college evenings, attending the University of Southern Maine. The first of her family to graduate from college, she was proud to be inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society and received the history department’s Esther Glidden Lange scholarship for showing promise and ability in history upon her graduation in 1984. She went on to receive a master’s degree in secondary education, also from USM.
Her great loves were her work and her family. From 1992 to 2005, she was Director of Student Affairs at the University of Southern Maine Muskie School of Public Service, where she earned the admiration and respect of many classes of graduate students, and formed and presided over the Muskie School Alumni Association.
Over the years, she was a vocal and active board member of The League of Women Voters and served as President of the Woodfords-Oakdale Neighborhood Association. She appreciated and collected art, antiques, and rare children’s books and took great pleasure in tending her small flower and vegetable garden.
For 46 years, she was a loving and devoted wife to husband Edward H. Goldman, also of Portland. She is also survived by daughter Jennifer Goldman and her partner, Sara Lewis, of South Portland, daughter Jill Goldman and her partner, Dr. Madhava Setty, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, and son Andrew Goldman and his wife, Robin Goldman, of Brooklyn, New York. She leaves four adoring grandchildren, Isadora Goldman-Leviton, Tansen Goldman-Setty, and Henry and Charles Goldman. She also considered her late brother in law, Ellis Goldman, his wife, Sybil, and their sons Joshua and Ethan to be a beloved part of her immediate family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation Sunday, December 12, 2010 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Beth El Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in her honor to the Maine Women’s Fund.
