Barbara was born in Lewistown, Maine on June 20, 1928. She was the only child of George H. Smith and Marion (Libby) Smith.
Her childhood was spent between the two family homes one in Groveton, New Hampshire and the other in Welchville, Maine. She also spent summers with relatives on Orr’s and Bailey Island in Harpswell, Maine.
After attending high school, she then went to work in the office of Wilner Wood Products in Norway, Maine. This is where she would meet her future husband Sherman Sanborn of Norway with whom she would marry in 1948. Barbara then became a full time stay at home mom to their four children. Years later, she entered the insurance business where she worked for the next 32 years.
Barbara had many likes including cooking (which her blue ribbon apple pie fetched an auction best of $1200 at the annual Oxford Fair). She also enjoyed doing puzzles, playing cards, gardening, music and her beloved animals.
She also served as Master of the Waterford Grange.
She is predeceased by her husband Sherman, both of her parents, a sister Caribel Jackson, two son in laws Jack Grinsell and Wayne Lorrain, as well as a grandson Christopher Grinsell.
Barbara is survived by her four children: Barbara Grinsell of Auburn, Maine, Jeff Sanborn of Minot, Maine, Kathy Lorrain of Auburn, Maine, Bette Sanborn Fecteau and husband Richard of Lewiston, Maine. She also leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren.
