Our dear Barbara Elaine Harrington Herrel passed peacefully early morning November 15, 2023 after over a decade-long battle with cancer. Her many friends and family marveled at her courage during this struggle. Her strength will be the light on our path when faced with overwhelming trouble.
Barbara was born November 11, 1961 in Galveston, Texas to David and Eloise Harrington, the youngest of four daughters, she captured hearts of all with her blonde hair, deep blue eyes (Blue Blue), and infectious laugh.
She moved many times with her family and made lifelong friends wherever she went. Barbara valued her relationships. Concerns more with needs of family and friends, whether old or new, more than her own welfare.
Barbara spent her childhood growing up in St. Simon’s Island, GA, graduating from Glen Academy in 1980 and Georgia Southern University in 1984. Her lifelong passion became all things science, chemistry, animals of every sort, work, family, and making friends. Work and travels took her to New Orleans where fate intervened and she met the love of her life Tom Herrel. She and Tom were inseparable throughout their thirty-three years together.
Barbara’s life is treasured for her loyalty, generosity, her ability to get straight to the point, her selflessness, and her wicked and witty sense of humor. These gifts never dimmed in the face of pain.
The pain seldom stopped her from visiting family and friends and planning the next great adventure.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents, brothers-in-law Chuck Egeland, John and Robert Herrel, nephews Brian Smith and Philip Eckerd.
She is survived by her loving husband Tom in Portland, Maine where they made their home for the last twenty-eight years, a daughter Emily Watford (Tyler) and two grandchildren, Charlotte and Jack, who are the light of Barbara’s heart in Pensacola, Florida. Three sisters that cherish their childhood memories of chasing their baby sister through her adventures. Kathy Flournoy (Phil), BJ Egeland, and Joan Harrington, all of Brunswick, Georgia, two nephews, Daniel Smith of Asheville, NC, Andrew Eckerd of Brunswick, Georgia, and nieces Jenifer and Amber Egeland also of Brunswick, Georgia.
The whole family would like to give New England Cancer Specialist a big thanks for all the care and support they gave Barbara to help extend her life with everyone she knew and loved.
