Portland- Arlene Alice Grant "Cookie", 87, of Portland, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Seaside Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. Cookie was born February 25, 1928 in Portland, the daughter of Henry and Marguerite (Ayer) Cook Sr.
Cookie was married to Wallace Ward Grant Jr. on June 1, 1951. Cookie graduated from Portland High School, Portland, Maine in 1946, and in 1949 she earned her RN degree at the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary. Cookie enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an RN beginning at the Maine Medical Center, following at the Brighton Medical Center (formerly the Osteopathic Hospital), and finishing her career at The Cedars (formerly the Jewish Home for the Aged).
Cookie was predeceased by her parents, Henry C. and Marguerite (Ayer) Cook Sr., her brother Henry C. Cook Jr. and his wife Ann and their daughter Connie.
She is survived by her husband Wallace Grant Jr., sister Beverly E. (Cook) Lyden, two sons, Kevin B. Grant and his fiancé, Rosina Workman, Brian K. Grant and his wife Justine, her daughter, Judi Grant and her husband Jim Kirby. Grandchildren, Zachary Grant, Gabrielle, Isabella, and Jacob Saucier. Cousins Blanche Mays and her husband Jim, Patty Dubay and her husband Ron and Wayne Cook. Several Nieces and nephews including Jean, Jim, David and Michael Lyden and Richard, Christian, and Sharon Cook and their families.
Cookie was a member of the State Street Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ and attended Stevens Avenue Congregational Church both located in Portland, Maine. She was a lifetime member of the Cornerstone Chapter of the Eastern Star, active committee member for the PHS class of '46, and cake maker for celebrations at the clubhouse in Florida. She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and was able to critique many of the players and there prowess on the field. She enjoyed the last 20 + years of her home away from home as a "Snowbird", spending 6 months of the year in North Fort Myers, Florida. Of late, she enjoyed spending time with her sister and cousins for a day of cards. Cookie was never far away from lying out at the pool and enjoying the company of friends and family. Cookie's greatest joy in life was spending time with family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on March 28, 2015 from 9-11 am at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland, with a service immediately following. A graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Forest City Cemetery, South Portland Maine.
