Anne Davidson Flynn passed away in Portland Maine on July 7th, 2022, at the age of 97. She met many people along the way who knew her fondly from one or another of several distinct phases in her life: first, in Montclair NJ, where she grew up and raised her family; later, in Belfast ME, where she lived in retirement; and finally, during her four years in Assisted Living in Portland, ME.
Anne was the youngest child of John Davidson Jr. and Annie Stackhouse Davidson of Montclair. She had three older brothers: John, Ralph, and Bill, who predeceased her.
She graduated from the Kimberly School in Montclair, and attended Drake Secretarial School. Anne was employed by AT&T as a typist for 8 years prior to raising her two children. In 1974, she began working full time again for 13 more years at Montclair State University, first as a typist and later in the Maintenance department. Upon retirement, she moved north to Belfast ME, and much later to Assisted Living in Portland, where she resided for the past 4 years.
Anne studied piano in her youth, and continued to play for most of her life. In her youth she also entertained by playing the accordion at family dinners. Her favorite music was popular songs from the 30's and 40's. Indeed, music was always central to her life. She loved Musical Theatre and regularly attended performances of the Montclair Operetta Club for decades. She also loved going into NYC to see the Rockettes or a Broadway show.
Anne was an avid reader of fiction her entire life, and her favorite genre was mystery/suspense. She loved playing games of almost any sort: cards, badminton, bowling, board games, and word games. She also enjoyed cooking, and was always up for having dinner parties, cookouts, potlucks, picnics, and preparing feasts during holidays and family visits.
She kept busy in retirement. The cornerstones of her 28 years in Belfast were her membership at Faith Temple Church and her volunteer work for Spectrum Generations.
At Faith Temple, she was enthusiastic about participating in any way she could: Bible Study Group, Choir, Volunteer activities, Potlucks, and more. She was revered as one of the eldest members of the Congregation.
At Spectrum Generations, she was an avid long-term volunteer, usually putting in 18-24 hours per week for the sheer love of it. She assisted in the Adult Day Care program, where she engaged in games and activities with the Clients, played piano for them, assisted with lunch service and otherwise contributed as needed. Through the years, she received a great many awards and accolades for her service, including several special commendations from President Barack Obama and the Governor of Maine.
In 2018, Anne threw herself with gusto into the next phase of life in Assisted Living in Portland. She delighted her caregivers and new friends with her dry wit that would pop out of her at unexpected moments. She kept a busy roster of daily activities: attending games, in-house concerts, classic movies, celebrations, and exercise classes.
She is survived by her two children, John Thomas Flynn, Jr. of Carteret, NJ, and Patricia Anne Flynn of Portland, ME; and was predeceased by John's wife Theresa Rita Flynn. She is also survived by her nephew and nieces: Ralph Davidson of New London, NH; Joan Davidson LaMonica of Harleysville, PA; and Doris Anne Davidson Snyder of South Glastonbury, CT.
