Ann Elizabeth Robinson Strout, 92, died Thursday, August 27 with her family by her side. She was born in Portland, October 25, 1922 a daughter of the late Harold R. and Harriett Woolverton Robinson. She attended Waynflete School and graduated from Cambridge School in Kendall Green, Mass. She then attended Bouve’ College in Amherst Mass. Following her education, Ann taught physical education at Waynfete School, Laurel School in Ohio and then taught at Jack Junior High School in Portland.
On April 14, 1951 she married Frank Noyes Strout. When Mr. Strout passed away in 2004, they had been married for 53 years. Ann had been a member of the Portland Junior League, State Street Church and served on the Board of Trustees for Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth during the cemetery expansion period. She was a Hall of Fame member of the American Saddlebred Association of Maine. She had been awarded the Good Sportsmanship Award from Twin States American Saddlebred Association. A member of the Cater Stable family, she was named Amateur of the Year for Chapter 14 of the United Professional Horseman’s Association. She was a member of the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust, was an avid fly fisherman, skier and tennis player, loved music, piano and the theater, but her greatest love besides her family were her horses.
She touched countless lives both young and old through her generosity and kindness, donating to State Street Church Food Pantry and the Animal Refuge League. She is survived by 1 daughter Ann S. Jones and her husband David of Cape Elizabeth, 3 sons, Frank S. Strout and his wife Nancy of Cape Elizabeth, Andrew R. Strout and his wife Kelly of Cape Elizabeth and Timothy W. Strout and his wife Deborah of Northport, N.Y., 8 grandchildren, Chandler Jones and his wife Sadie of Freeport, Stuart Jones of So. Portland, Jamie Garten and her husband Leete of Baltimore, Md., Taylor Strout and his wife Nikki of Bennington, Vt., Timothy J. Strout of Northport, N.Y., Nicole Strout, of Northport, N.Y., Rebecca Strout of Cape Elizabeth and Matthew Strout of Northport, N.Y., 4 great grandchildren, Jackson Garten, Cooper Strout, Robinson Jones and Holden Garten, 1 brother, Timothy C. Robinson and his wife Maren of Cape Elizabeth, 4 nephews, Anthony Robinson, Michael Robinson, Tyler Robinson and Peter Robinson, longtime loyal and devoted friend and caretaker, Michael Wageman who has worked for the Strout family for 20 years and her beloved Labrador, Angie. She was predeceased by a brother, John M. Robinson in 2006.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Gosnell House for the care that was extended to Ann and her family during her stay there and to the care providers of the Visiting Angels.
A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, September 3 at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland from 3-6 PM. A celebration of Ann’s life will be Friday, September 4 at State Street Church, 159 State St., Portland at 11 am. Burial will be private in Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth.
