She was born on December 24, 1925 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada and raised on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada by adoptive parents Freeman Afton and Alice Batson. Ruth later moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts to complete her high school education at Cambridge High and Latin School.
After graduating, Ruth worked for John Hancock where she met her great friend and future sister-in-law, Mary Bryce, who introduced Ruth to her brother, Jack. Jack and Ruth were married in 1947 and later moved to West Boylston, Massachusetts where they raised their three children, Jack, Carol and Bill.
Ruth worked for the West Boylston Public Schools, Holden Nursing Home and Worcester County National Bank. Ruth and Jack retired to Naples, Florida and continued to spend their summers at Pine River Pond in New Hampshire to be close to family and northern friends.
She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, was a Sunday school teacher, a den mother and participated in a variety of social organizations. Ruth enjoyed attending her husband’s company conferences across the country and their ocean cruises
.
Ruth is remembered as being a wonderful friend to many from Campobello, Cambridge, West Boylston, Pine River Pond, Naples and finally Maine.
Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, John Bryce, and by her eldest son, John Bryce Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Bryce Bibeau and her husband Paul of Scarborough, ME; son, Bill Bryce, and his fiancée, Cheryl Connor of Worcester, MA; daughter-in-law Elizabeth E. Bryce of Salem, MA; grandchildren David Bryce Bibeau; William Bryce Jr; Sarah Bryce; and many very special nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held in West Boylston, MA.
