Robert Crosby was born May 29, 1936 to Fronie Viola Bailey and Ralph H. Crosby in Walterboro, SC. He moved to Charleston,SC during WW2 with his mother and grandmother, while his mother worked in the shipyards. He lived in Charleston, attending elementary and High School, and was trained and worked as a brick mason after graduation.
He married Patricia A. Smith of Florence, SC in December, 1956 (m. 1955-1971) and joined the USMC active duty in 1956 after serving in the Reserves, and trained at Paris Island, SC, posting first to Edenton, NC Airbase. Robert worked as a fighter plane and helicopter mechanic initially, as an NCO. In 1966 he was given the opportunity to attend officer training school, and became a 2nd Lt. He served two tours of duty in Japan and the Philippines between 1959 and 1963, two tours of Vietnam in 1967-68 and 1971-72. He retired from active service in the summer of 1977 as a Captain and moved to Arkansas with his wife Elizabeth Shippen (m.1972-1991) and later to Chicago, Il where he began working for Ryder Trucking as a terminal manager from 1979-2006, in Atlanta, GA and Jacksonville, FL when he retired a second time.
Robert was a life-long active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in various positions over his lifetime from Elder to Stake President, in a number of churches from NC, SC, GA, Al, Fl. He and his wife Sonya served a Military Relations Mission in the Fukuoka Japan Mission. He is survived by his wife Sonya Carver Crosby originally of Georgia; seven children Nowa R. Crosby of Shelburne Vt, Alex K. Crosby of Andrews, SC, Blaine L. Crosby of Andrews, SC, Patrice L. Wilson of Pelham, MA, Bruce J. Crosby of Gilbert, AZ and their spouses; Amber Rose Alden of Fayetteville Ga, his precious girl, Kinzley Rose, Papa's girl and his sister Gail Burton of Lexington, KY. In addition he has 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022 11:00am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 240l SW Matheson Ave., Palm City, FL 34990.
