He w born in St. Clair, Michigan in 1953 to Charles and Ethel Dowd. He grew up and attended Catholic schools in Port Huron, Michigan.
John served in the United States Navy from 1972-1975. When he returned home to Port Huron he married his wife of 45 years, Nancy (Pickelhaupt) Dowd. They raised son, Ryan.
In his younger years John enjoyed running marathons, playing sports, ad, of course, following Michigan football and basketball.
In 1976, he joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters Organization of Port Huron. He took on two small boys, Eddie and Michael Kindle. Who, to this day, are still a very proud addition to our family.
He was employed by Coca Cola distributing and Port Huron Paper. He later attended Wayne State Law School of Detroit.
In 1986, he decided to move his family to Florida to work with his brother Gary Dowd, who owned Dockside Marine Service. John has owned and operated Dockside Marine Service #2 for the last 35 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ethel Dowd, and his sister, Beverly.
He is survived by his wife Nancy (Pickelhaupt), son Ryan (Melissa), love of his life granddaughter Mia Shea Dowd, brother, Gary (Becki), sisters Candice (Roel) Mendoza, Gail (Dave) White, Susan Addley (Tom Zoble) and sister in law Cathy MacPherson, goddaughter, Amy Mendoza, godson Joseph White and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Port Huron, Michigan.
