Alcides Martins DaSilva passed away at 93 years old surrounded by family on Monday, April 3rd. Alcides was a proud Portuguese-American born in Newark, NJ, in 1930 and raised in Nogueira do Cavo, Portugal, until 1949. Alcides lived a life full of adventure, beginning with his solo move back to America at 19 before he spoke English. In 1955 Alcides married the love of his life, Maria Teresa DaSilva, and they spent 68 incredible years together.
Also known as “Al” to American friends, Al helped build New York City as a construction worker through the golden era of the post-war 1950s. He then joined Pan American Airways where Alcides enjoyed a successful 15-year career. Throughout his time in New York, Alcides helped settle Portuguese immigrants new to America. His home on Cookie Lane in Islip Terrace was known for its welcoming barbecues.
Alcides moved to South Florida in 1985 where he became a pillar in the Portuguese community. Both as the Secretary of the Portuguese-American Cultural Club of Port St. Lucie and as a correspondent for the Luso-Americano Newspaper. Born the same year as the very first World Cup, Alcides was a die-hard soccer fan that supported the Portuguese and American national teams and Sporting Clube de Portugal.
Alcides is survived by his beautiful wife, Maria, their three beloved children Maria, Joe, and Teresa, daughter-in-law Judy, son-in-law Ken, and six grandchildren Jessica, Jill, Joe, Jack, Hope, and Ben. Alcides is also survived by many relatives and friends in Portugal, Canada, France, and Brazil.
Alcides will be remembered during a Visitation at Ayock Funeral Home in Tradition on Thursday, April 13th from 6:00pm-9:00pm and a mass at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church on Saturday, April 15th at 10:00am.
