Mrs. Jane Carol Wedge (Saltalamachia), age 78, of Port Orange, Florida passed away in her sleep after a long illness on Thursday, May 23. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded with love by her husband, Robert, and son, Rob, daughter-in-law, Barbara of Richmond, Virginia, and indispensable family friend, Charles Lockwood of Tallahassee, Florida.
Mrs. Wedge is a 1952 graduate of Oswego (NY) High School, who worked for General Electric in Syracuse, New York where she met her husband Robert until 1967. She moved to Daytona Beach originally in 1967, continuing to work for GE, and returned to New York in 1970. Upon returning to New York, Mrs. Wedge became a homemaker and gave birth to her only son, Rob, in 1974 and became his first (and best) teacher teaching him to read at a very young age and numerous other life lessons along the way. Mrs. Wedge and her husband retired to Florida in 1987 and built their Port Orange home in 1990 where they have lived since. Mrs. Wedge was an outstanding cook, avid collector and passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan who spent much of her time focused on those passions before becoming ill in 2006.
Mrs. Wedge was predeceased by her mother, Nancy in 1984 and her father Angelo in 1989. Mrs. Wedge is one of eleven children and was predeceased by her brother James in 1976, her sister Nancy in 2004, her sister Angie in 2007, her sister Anna in 2008, her sister Shirley in 2010, and her sister Lucy in 2011. She is survived by her husband Robert of Port Orange, FL, and her son Robert and daughter-in-law, Barbara, of Chesterfield, Virginia. She is also survived by her brothers John, Bart, and Joseph Saltalamachia of Oswego, New York, and her sister Mary Taormina, of Lufkin, Texas. The family knows it could not have made it through the many years of her sickness without the assistance of many hard-working medical professionals, but especially Gloria Johnson-Williams, whose selfless dedication to Jane kept her laughing.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to VITAS, whose team provided incredible assistance to all members of the Wedge family in Jane’s final days.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 8:30 a.m. Wednesday May 29, 2013 at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church 4550 Clyde Morris Blvd. Port Orange. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.volusiamemorialfuneral.com
