Barbara Ann Strnad, age 73, of Port Orange, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Barbara was born April 18, 1945. Barbara was born in Henderson, NV, to Frances and Charles Wingate. Due to the death of her mother, Frances Wingate, she was raised by her Aunt Gladys along with her stepfathers Frank Bouska and later Rick Williams.
Childhood friends include Joanne Hammond (recently deceased), Marilyn Smith. Her current friends include Pauline, Janet, Letica, Mark, and Helen.
Barbara graduated from high school in 1963, her interests included Spanish Club, dance Desertairs, and science. In 1964 she went to college at Oregon State University and became an x-ray tech. In 1965 she had her first child, Lynn. 1966-1968 Barbara worked as a stewardess for Frontier Airlines. One of her scary experiences included a time when her plane was struck by lightning. Also, their flights at times were chartered by the Denver Broncos (still one of Stacy’s favorite teams). During 1968-1970 she lived on the island of Oahu. In 1970 she moved back to Las Vegas, in 1970 she met Francis Strnad, and they got married in 1971. In 1973 they moved to Colorado Springs, CO, and Stacy was born in 1975. Barbara was a stay-at-home mom until 1980 when she started working as a dental assistant. In 1982 the family moved to Monte Vista, CO. In 1984 Barbara became an LPN, receiving her degree from San Luis Valley Vocational School. In 1986 Barbara and Frances got divorced, and soon after Barbara moved back to Colorado Springs. In 1990 Barbara and Stacy moved to Prescott, AZ, where Barbara’s parents Gladys and Rick were living. Barbara then moved to Greeley, CO, in 1995, then in 1996 she graduated from Morgan Community College where she obtained her RN. Most of her career (about 40 years) she has worked in geriatrics and rehab.
Significant interests include animal rights, caring for others, and her Christian faith. Food that she liked to eat included almost anything grilled, Chinese food including garlic chicken, General Tso chicken from the Walmart deli, and teriyaki chicken. Other interests included reading books, especially romance novels, motivation books, waterskiing and prayer books. Also, plaster painting, movies, gardening, Hallmark channel, as well as walking her dogs at City Center in the afternoon and Reed Canal Park in the morning.
Her pets included Susette (poodle), Shroom (Brittney Spaniel), Pookie (beagle mix), Antwan (poodle), Sassy (cat), Orange (cat), and her faithful pal Oliver (poodle) who is now with Stacy.
In the last several years she volunteered at Guardian Ad Litem, and part time nursing for friends.
Barbara was cremated according to her wishes. There is going to be a private reception for her Celebration of Life.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Barbara’s memory to Halifax Humane Society, St. Jude’s Hospital, or donate to the cost of a memorial bench to be located at Reed Canal Park.
Barbara was best known to be always funny, caring, loyal, driven, persistent, and to have tremendous attention to detail.
