Vernon Thigpen, 82, of Port Lavaca passed away August 27, 2022. He was born August 15, 1940 in Cuero to Ned Givings Thigpen Sr. and Viola Viena Simon Thigpen. Vernon served in the U.S. Army and worked as a millwright for Alcoa for 34 years. He enjoyed spending time woodworking, ranching, gardening, and making homemade sausage.
He is survived by his sons, Darrell Thigpen (Amy), Carl Thigpen (Barbara), Scott Thigpen (Candice); daughter, Ashley Thigpen (Christopher Heuss); siblings, Doris White, Walter Thigpen, Douglas Thigpen, Loyce Sikes, Deborah Thamm; 9 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Jane Reitz Thigpen; son, Brian Thigpen; parents; and siblings, Ned Thigpen Jr., Geraldine Spears, and Ruby Thigpen.
Mr. Thigpen will lie in state at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home Friday, September 2, 2022 from 8-12 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will also be on Friday, September 2 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with Father Bryan Heyer officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Darrell Thigpen, Carl Thigpen, Scott Thigpen, Christopher Heuss, Blake Thigpen, and Justin Thigpen.
