RAMIRO “SPEEDY” MARTINEZ, 74, died in Port Lavaca on November 7, 2015, after a battle with Alzheimer’s dementia. Born in Hebbronville, Texas, he was the eldest of 3 children born to the late Genaro and Isabel Martinez. He joined the United States Army where he served as a Drill Sergeant. He worked for many years at the ALCOA facility in Point Comfort, Texas as a Machinist; was very active in many of the SCOPE Safety Initiatives onsite and a member of the site’s 25 Year Club. He was an active parishioner of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church; he served as a member of the Knights of Columbus #3253, and also held a position as a Grand Knight. He also was very active as a Eucharistic Minister as well as Usher for the Church. He was very enthusiastic about many philanthropic efforts, and would never decline to offer a helping hand.
Along with church and volunteerism, Ramiro loved his family dearly. He is survived by his wife, Iris S. Martinez; children: Marquita Martinez, Raquel Garza (Kenneth), and Ramsey Martinez (Rebekah); sister, Guadalupe “Mina” Perez (Santiago); nieces: Adela Perez, Adelaida Perez (Ismael), and Adeliza Ramirez (Albert); as well as his grandchildren: Joseph, Nikolas, & Blaise. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Roel R. Martinez.
A visitation will be held Thursday, November 12, 2015, from 6-7 pm, with a rosary at 7 pm at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home in Port Lavaca. Funeral Mass will beFriday, November 13, 2015 at11 am at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Burial with military honors under the auspices of the Calhoun County Veterans Joint Honor Guard will follow in Greenlawn Gardens. Pallbearers are the active members of the Knights of Columbus #3253.
