A devoted husband of 55 years, and a loving father of five children. He enjoyed spending time with family, playing guitar and attending Bluegrass festivals with Joyce. They made many friends across many states.
He retired after 35 years as Head Operator at ALCOA; Diesel Mechanic at Auto Parts & Machinery; Member of American Legion Post 167; NRA; Good Sam Club; Member of the Calhoun County Joint Honor Guard; former Boy Scout Master for Troop 361; He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1962 as a tank driver and mechanic with the 49th Armored Division.
Survivors: wife, Joyce Rosalee Gerdes Smith of Port Lavaca; mother, Mozelle Smith of Little River; sons, Jeffrey V. Smith (wife Stephenie) and Eric A. Smith (wife Lorrie) of Port Lavaca; daughters Teresa Smith Morgan (husband Tom) of Palacios, Valerie Smith Reese (husband Steve) of Port Lavaca, and Lisa Smith McLellan (husband Dane) of Drexel, Missouri; grandchildren, Scotty J. Morgan; Alan J. Smith; Michael T. Morgan; Caitlin J. Smith; Kurtis T. McLellan, Courtney M. Reese; Garrett L. McLellan; Cody J. Reese; Jake R. McLellan; Wyatt C. McLellan; Melanie G. Smith and Justin A. Smith; and two great grandchildren, Cheyenne Smith and Adalyn Grier. Also sister, Peggy L. Smith Poulter (husband Ronnie) of Waco and Joyce K. Smith Buckley (husband Conrad) of Deer Park.
Preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home with burial following at Green Lawn Gardens Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the Calhoun County Veterans Joint Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Scotty J. Morgan, Alan J. Smith, Michael T. Morgan, Kurtis T. McLellan, Garrett L. McLellan, Cody J. Reese. Honorary Pallbearers grandsons Jake R. McLellan, Wyatt C. McLellan, Justin A. Smith and granddaughters Caitlin J. Smith, Courtney M. Reese, Melanie G. Smith. Jerry Gerdes, Randy Kacir and Huey Smith.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 167 or the American Cancer Society.
