Dora Jean Smith, 83 of Port Lavaca passed away, September 13, 2014. She was born October 8, 1930 in Midfield, TX to the late Joseph and Dora Mae Hurta. Jean was a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church and retired from Union Carbide Lab Department. Before her career at Union Carbide she owned and operated Jean’s Beauty Shop in Point Comfort, and also worked for the Port Lavaca Wave and United States Postal Service.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Betty Ann Smith Ley of Cypress, TX; her son, Tommy J. Smith of Dayton, TX; 3 grandchildren, Misty Jimenez of Port Lavaca who was her caretaker for the last 15 years, Tammy White of Tomball, and Trisha White of Dayton; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Kathy Trumpy of Crosby, Georgia Mikosh of Port Lavaca; brothers, Billy Joe Hurta of Ingleside and Leroy Hurta of Angleton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon A. Smith and her brother, Howard L. Hurta.
A time of visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm with a Rosary to begin at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Richardson Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Our Lady of The Gulf Catholic Church with Father Tommy Chen officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Sidney Smith, Joel Dean Hurta, David Hurta, Chris Hurta, Michael Hurta, and Nathan Marek.
