Eleanor Mae Marx (nee Zuck) was born May 29, 1931 in Manhattan, NY and passed away September 9, 2022 in Greenport, NY. Her parents Adolf Zuck and Martha Pilz emigrated from Austria/Poland and met in Rhode Island. They raised two children, Eleanor (Ellie), and Richard (Buddy) in the Bronx. Ellie excelled at academics, graduated early from high school, and majored in vocal music and elementary education at Hunter College in Manhattan. She met her first husband, the late Henry Marx, after his service in WWII on a YMCA college retreat at Silver Bay, Lake George. They settled in Port Jefferson with their three daughters, Laura, Lisa and Irene. Ellie taught primary grades for many years, most of them in Miller Place. She was a proud member of the Long Island Symphonic Choral Association and she traveled often with the group as they sang in concerts all over the world. Ellie also enjoyed gardening, healthy nutrition, public radio, and contra dancing. She married Phil Carter in 2009. Together they shared a love of music, science and progressive ideals. They were active leaders in the laity of the Unitarian Fellowship for many years. Ellie was a strong supporter of the American Association of University Women, Planned Parenthood, and wetland conservation on Long Island. She is survived by her husband Philip S. Carter Jr.; her brother Richard (Judy) Zuck; her daughters Laurie (Gary) Short, Lisa (Malcolm) Lickers, and Irene (John) Olson; niece Jeanine Davis and nephew Daniel Zuck and their families; and 5 grandchildren, Jakob, Paula, Ian, Lindsay and Carly. Her wishes are to have her ashes scattered at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook Memorial Garden in a private ceremony.
