He is predeceased by his wife Betty-Lou and survived by his loving son Robert (Maureen) and his daughter Diane Pappas (fiancé Paul Hadley). His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his grandchildren, Lexi and Calli.
Edward Norris was born on May 9, 1929 at Rockaway Beach Hospital, Rockaway Beach, New York. He was the son of Baxter and Helen (Climenson) Norris and spent his youth living in the Rectory of his father’s church, The Church of the Redeemer in Astoria, New York, with his brother, Richard.
Edward went on to attend Columbia University for both undergraduate and medical school and did his residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, one of the nation’s leaders in medical education. It was during this time that Edward met Betty Lou Dobson at Cornell University’s School of Nursing. They were married August 8, 1953 in New York.
After a two-year stint in the Army as a doctor at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Edward and Betty Lou moved to Port Jefferson in June 1960, to accept a position as an Anesthesiologist at both Mather Memorial Hospital and St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. He would go on to become Director of Anesthesia from 1979 until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Norris was a respected and much-loved doctor at both hospitals for over 30 years.
Ted, as he was known outside the walls of the hospital, was an accomplished sailor, having spent those 30 years cruising the East Coast from Maine to Chesapeake Bay each summer with his wife, Betty Lou, Robert and Diane. After cruising the British Virgin Islands on a spring break, Ted and Betty Lou decided to purchased a home on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands and wintered there until they sold it in 2004. If Ted wasn’t out on the water, you could find him in the garden - designing bridges, water features, stone walls and beautiful perennials gardens at his home in Belle Terre.
After sailing and gardening, Ted enjoyed investing in the stock market and became very proficient at managing money. His love of sailing, gardening and investing were passed down to this children and his legacy will live on for years to come.
Lastly, Ted was a loving husband, father and grandfather, whose presence on this earth will be greatly missed. He touched the hearts of many with his caring and empathetic ways and was always willing to lend a hand to any one in need.
