Our beloved mother, Shirley Anne Murphy, 94, of Binghamton, NY went to be with her Savior on August 5, 2024. She was predeceased by her husband, William T. Murphy (Bill), her parents, Margaret and Alfred Halsey Merriam, her brother John (Jack) Merriam, sister in law Edna Merriam, and brother James (Jim) Merriam. She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Michael) Sadowsky, William T. Murphy, Jr. (Sara Whittle), Jo Anne Murphy, and Thomas (Kimberly) Murphy. She is also survived by her grandchildren Carol (Matthew) Bergantino, Mark (Savanna) Sadowsky, Zachary Dourafei, Adam Dourafei , Joseph (Kathleen) Murphy, and Katherine (Patrick Shine) Murphy, great grandchildren Declan, Lily and Margaret, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews. She was especially close with nieces Mary (Bob) LaCourt and Eileen (Paul) Ziobrowski who considered her a second mother after their mother passed on. She spent many years working as an administrative assistant at General Electric in Westover and then IBM in Owego, and developed many long lasting friendships there.
Our mother was a devout Catholic and long time parishioner of Sts. John and Andrew Church in Binghamton, New York. She was married for 61 years to our father Bill, and Shirley especially looked forward to being reunited in heaven with him and other close family members who have passed. She was a talented water colorist, and enjoyed playing bridge with the girls, golfing, swimming and other outdoor activities. Our mother loved her family above all else and we will all fondly remember the many big family holiday celebrations at our parents’ home. Our family wishes to extend special thanks to the wonderful compassionate staff at Mercy House of the Southern Tier where she found peace and serenity in her final days. Memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to Mercy House. A funeral mass will be scheduled for a later date to be announced. It will be followed by a private burial to be held at Quaker Lake Cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved Bill, overlooking the lake where they met.
