Robert “Bob” Smith, 82 of Binghamton, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, May 10, 2024. He was welcomed by his wife and love of his life of 54 years Nora (Cashman) Smith. He was also welcomed by his parents Edith and James Markham; his mother and father-in-law whom he adored, Irene and Erwin Cashman; his siblings, sister Charlyn Solley and brother Gerry Davies; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Bert (Joyce Cashman), Phyllis (Lyle) Goodnough- (Tom) Judge, Blanche La Gier, Grace (Tom) Creagh, and Donna Bartow.
He is survived by his daughter and son in-law Michele “Shelly” (Dana) Farro, and the lights of his life, his grandchildren Michael Farro (Julia Lacona) and Kaleigh Farro(Jacob Behonick). “Uncle Bob” is also survived by several nieces and nephews including a very special niece Kathi Cashman, great-nephew Brian (Hannah) Cashman, and their 4-legged friend Stella that visited and kept an eye on Uncle Bob routinely. He is also survived by his “partner in crime” Jim Wilson, whom he routinely volunteered with to help others to build or fix something for anyone in need. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Dorothy Davies.
He was a Lather for many years helping to build many local hospitals and schools, as well as several colleges including SUNY Oswego, where his granddaughter attends. There was often a comparison of how fast each had traveled from Binghamton to Oswego. He also worked at Four County Library System driving the Bookmobile for many years and then later retired as the Facilities Manager.
He was a self-assured man that blessed us with many gifts by example including; work ethic, friendship, helping of others, and the fierceness of which he loved his wife and family. He gave his time and talents selflessly to anyone in need, regardless if he had known them for several years or just met them. He loved growing up, meeting his wife and later building their family home on Nowlan Road; “the hill” which was part of his identity and until his passing. It was abundantly clear he did not want to live anywhere else but on “the hill”. He enjoyed woodworking, funiture building, hunting, fishing, meticulously grooming his 3 acre lawn, visiting with his friends and family and hosting Friday night “Happy Hour”, where all were welcome.
Our family would like to thank UHS for the compassionate care he received at Emergency Department (Dr. Sacco and Team), the Nurses and Staff of South Tower 3 and 4, the Pediatric Unit, and the Physicians and staff at Upper Front Street. Additionally we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our friends and family for their outpouring of support and prayers.
The family will receive friends at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson on Friday, May 17, 2024 from 9-11AM with a Funeral Service to follow at 11AM. Burial will be in the Chenango Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers kindly consider donations to The Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference, 1182 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY 13901.
