Patricia L. (Davis) Roberts, 90, of Chenango Bridge and Manlius, NY, passed away peacefully July 16, 2024 at The Nottingham Residential Health Care Facility. She was born on July 9, 1934 in Binghamton, NY to Howard and Helen (Hogan) Davis of Chenango Bridge. She would live in Chenango Bridge for the next 82 years, with a one-year detour to Marywood College in Scranton, PA. She had one older brother, James, dozens of uncles and aunts, and countless cousins, all of whom she loved dearly.
Pat met her future husband, George Roberts, at the ripe old age of 6. George grew up next door to Pat’s grandparents in Scranton, PA. Once they were racing and Pat fell in the street, scraping her leg. George took her home, fearing he would be in trouble with her parents (he was not). After this, whenever she would play “house” with her friends, her husband in the game would always be named George. Fate, and Pat, would not be denied, and George and Pat were married on June 12, 1954 at St. Catherine’s of Siena Church in Hillcrest, NY. They stayed in Chenango Bridge, raising 4 sons (although some days it felt to Pat like 44). They had a marriage of incomparable love, strength and devotion; its only flaw was its duration, as George died too soon of brain cancer in 1986 at the age of 55. She never dated again, always saying that she’d already had the best.
After raising her sons, Pat entered the workforce, first working for the DMV, then for the NYS Court System ultimately as a Deputy Court Clerk, a job she loved. She never tired of telling stories of rascal attorneys, defendants both innocent and spectacularly guilty, and judges, most of whom she found principled and admirable.
Pat’s retirement involved playing cards and traveling with her friends Eva, Jeannette, Ann, and Jean, spending her summers in Fishers Landing, in a cottage on the St. Lawrence River, her second home. She visited her sons, daughters-in-law and beloved grandchildren in Phoenix and San Diego. Pat was a devout Catholic, a member of the parish of St. Catherine’s, St. Francis of Assisi in Hillcrest and Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville, never missing her nightly prayers. She spent a lot of time with her cats, all of whom would have won the title of Most Spoiled Kitty in America if such a contest existed.
One could describe her life in a simple sentence. She loved her family and friends, her work, her cats, the 1000 islands, and all that God and life would bring to her door. Or maybe even more simply: She loved.
Pat is survived by son David Roberts and daughter-in-law Annette of Phoenix, AZ; son George of Rome, NY; son James and daughter-in-law Ann Marie of Fayetteville, NY; son Thomas and daughter-in-law Martha of Phoenix, AZ.; grandchildren Jessica, Amanda, Andrew (Noor), Aaron (Michon), Kristin (Josh) Aldrich, and Katelyn (Garth) Grant; three great-grandchildren Delilah, Anabelle and Jolene. She was predeceased by her grandson Justin.
