Jane Rae Sweet, 96, of Chenango Bridge, passed away April 17th at United Methodist Nursing Home. We lost a Sweet Sweet Lady, She joins beloved family….mother and father Clara and Raymond Silvernail, husband Barrie, son David, sisters/spouses Carol and Ed (Dewar), Joan and Dick (Armstrong), Nancy (Paige), Sweet in-laws Lillian and Floyd Sweet, Janice and Robert (Dude) and too many other relatives and dear friends. So many wonderful family memories being recaptured again! Jane is survived by her son Bud/Karen Sweet, grandson Barrett and numerous nieces and nephews
Jane graduated from Johnson City High School, started her family following marriage to Barrie in 1949 then went on to work for Bob Fisher, Bob Rose, Broome County and New York State. Jane became a Broome County Legislator as well as Broome County Ombudsman for Long Term Care. She helped create St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Chenango Bridge, always serving the public, neighbors, friends and patrons she was endeared and committed to her entire life.
Not enough can be said as to how warm and welcoming she was….yippee ki yo ki yea!
Retired Father Mark Giroux may have said it best….
“Seems to me that a ray of sunshine is missing from our world...
“I cannot think of Jane without picturing a big smile on her face. I used to ask her, "Jane, how are ya?" and she would reply, "Well, I think I'm all right, but maybe you should ask around." I liked that so much I have shamelessly plagiarized her words for years.
She was just the greatest to visit. I could never get out of her house after a home communion visit without her pressing some dessert or other on me (not that I tried too hard). We always had a lot of laughs.
I never met her husband, but whenever she spoke of Barrie, it was with such delight, affection, and love, it made me realize I had missed a joy in life. And of course, she adored her boys.
It was always impressive to hear her stories about judges she'd worked with, and her activities with the county legislature. She certainly made a positive difference for so many citizens of Broome County.
And she was one of the founding mothers of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Chenango Bridge. I'm not sure if she was at the very first living room gathering of what would become St. Mark's Mission, but she might have been. And if not, she was certainly one of the very first members of that parish I came to love so much.
I will always remember Jane and smile when I do.”
Thank you Mom, Memere….we love you.
The family will receive friends at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 725 River Road in Chenango Bridge on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 10-11AM with a Funeral Service to follow at 11AM. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park.
