Born April 5th 1920 in the parish of Sorbie, Wigtownshire, Scotland, the youngest son of the Rev., Later Professor, Oliver S. Rankin and Olivia T. Rankin. On the family moving to Edinburgh, he attended the Edinburgh Academy and subsequently studied Philosophy at Edinburgh University. After graduation he lectured in that subject at a number of Universities including Edinburgh University (3 years), The University of Malaya in Singapore (9 years), Monash University, Australia (7 years) and finally the University of Victoria, B.C. (15 years), where for much of the time he served as department chair.
During the war and it immediate aftermath, he worked in the British National Fire Service and later in the Coal Mines. He authored 2 books, the first entitled Choice and Chance and the second, the Recovery of the Soul. Upon retiring, he became active in the former Sannich Greenbelt Association and later in the Friends of Mount Douglas Park Society. For recreation, he joined the Outdoor Club of Victoria.
He is survived by his daughter Patricia, and two sons, Oliver and Neil.
