Deryck, aka “Skipper French” or “Webbie”, was born in Montego Bay, St James, Jamaica. At an early age, he moved with his family to Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. Deryck was the eldest boy in his family of eight - three brothers and four sisters. He was full of energy and very mischievous in his youth. Growing up, he was part of “The 3 Musketeers”, which consisted of himself, his brother Michael and cousin Jerry. Together they traversed the hills above his childhood home (Tucker Avenue), having fun, shooting birds and getting into all sorts of trouble. After his high school graduation from Jamaica College in 1953, he took a banana ship to the UK, where he attended the Royal College of Arts, Science and Technology in Glasgow, Scotland. He graduated as a Refrigeration, Heating and Air conditioning Engineer. He later furthered his studies in the field of Management. Deryck returned to Jamaica in 1960 where he took on more responsible positions over the years ending with his favourite job, General Manager of Prospect Estate in St. Mary, Jamaica. In 1981, both he and his wife Erna made the tough decision to leave his beloved Jamaica and moved the family to British Columbia. He continued to work at a number of companies in the lower mainland including the position of Senior Property Manager. Unfortunately, health issues limited his ability to work. He retired to become the Household Manager, (supervised closely by Erna); and also became “Grandpa/Papa” to his precious grandchildren. Deryck always had a zest for life and possessed a great sense of humour. He cared deeply for his family and extended family. He had the ability to talk to anyone and as a result had many friends. His fondest wish was to see Jamaica again and visit with his siblings and longtime friends. Deryck will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all.
