It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of James Mitchell, age 59, who, after 8+ years, lost his courageous battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) on September 25, 2024, in his home in North Port, Florida. A man of unparalleled warmth, humor, and loyalty, Jimmy touched the lives of countless people with his vibrant personality and generous spirit.
Born August 1, 1965, in New York City, Jimmy was a die-hard baseball fan, and never missed a chance to cheer on his beloved Mets. This love for baseball was the glue that kept his tight knit group of childhood friends in touch for all these years.
Jimmy was a generous, caring and kind person. Whether as a strong-pour bartender extraordinaire or as the ever-romantic officiant of over 27,000 weddings in New York City, Jimmy brought people together, leaving lasting memories with his contagious smile. Jimmy’s artistic talents extended to the creation of Star Barks, a dog treat bakery, where he designed treats and birthday cakes for dogs – so that even dogs all over felt his kindness.
Jimmy and his best friend and wife, Mary, had a marriage admired by many. Their relationship was filled with laughter, banter, and sweet terms of endearment, as they often called each other “husband and wife.” Together, they traveled the world, making memories and sharing their love for food, unique drinks, and adventure.
Predeceased by his father, Jerry Mitchell, Jimmy leaves behind his devoted wife of 24 years, Mary; his loyal dog, Chip; his mother, Camille; brother and sister, Tommy and Annmarie, nieces & nephews (Brian, Amber, Joseph, and Abigail), aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who will forever cherish his memory. Jimmy’s zest for life, kindness, and laughter will echo in the hearts of all who knew him.
There will be private church service in Florida this week.
A Celebration of Life get-together is set for Sunday, October 20th beginning at 5:30pm at Lee’s Tavern in Staten Island – all are welcome to come toast Jimmy one more time.
