Alice O. Chapman, 84, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away Saturday July 7, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. She was born in New York City on October 11, 1927 to Floyd and Grace O'Rear. She received her early education from the Horace Mann demonstration school of Columbia University and the Leonia NJ public schools. She received her degree in elementary school education from Trenton State College and taught school in Morristown NJ. Later when her children were older, she taught school on Kwajalein, Marshall Islands and became Director of the Morristown NJ Methodist Church Day Care Center.
In 1988, she and her husband retired to Punta Gorda where she became active in several organizations. She has been active in the missions work of the First United Methodist Church, acting as chairman for several years. She has also been a member of the Punta Gorda Garden Club and during its annual Historic Homes Tour, has served as docent for the church since it serves as host for the event. For over 35 years, Alice has been a member of P.E.O., a philanthropy supporting women's education. In Florida, she was initially a member of Chapter GA, Port Charlotte, and then became a member of Chapter HN, Punta Gorda, serving as its first president. She has been an active participant in the ladies Doves group of the Peace River Sail and Power Squadron, enjoying their monthly games day. She was also active in the local Telephone Pioneers and their Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Chapman; daughter, Cynthia (John) Curtis; son, Alan (Elizabeth) Chapman; son-in-law, William Armbruster; grandchildren, Jonathan Chapman, Katherine and Richard Armbruster; a sister, Elizabeth Cilwa of Ocala, FL and brother, Barrett (Virginia) O'Rear of DE. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Armbruster.
A Memorial Service for Alice will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday July 16, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda, 507 W Marion Ave. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the church or to Tidewell Hospice at tidewell.org.
