John William Y’Barbo, Sr., 90, of Groves, Texas passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015. John was born September 20, 1924 in Chireno, Texas to James and Lucy Y’Barbo. He was a graduate from Stephen F. Austin University and received his Master’s in Education from Indiana University. John was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and was a devoted Catholic. He was actively involved as an usher and a member of Sacred Heart Society. John prayed the rosary daily. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and saw duty in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 plus years of service. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was an assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts. John was very generous with his time and energy and enjoyed volunteering at the Hospitality Center. He enjoyed gardening, sports and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Aggies.
John is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Catherine Y’Barbo; brothers, James Barbo, Norbert Y’Barbo, Louis Y’Barbo, and Dennis Y’Barbo.
He is survived by his sisters, Majorie and Frances; sons, John W. Y’Barbo, Jr., and wife Eileen, Paul Y’Barbo, David Y’Barbo and wife Nittaya, and Stephen Y’Barbo; daughters, Mary Adams and husband Steve, Jackie Goss and husband Steve. John is also survived by 15 grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home. A visitation will be held Friday, March 6, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2015 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Chireno, Texas.
