Hoadley; Robert “Bob” George – Bob entered this world in Hamilton, Ontario on February 6th, 1932. He departed peacefully from Echo Village Care Home in Port Alberni, BC on May 7th, 2013 with his wife Diane at his side.
Survived by his wife of 61 years, Diane (nee Alderson); sons Bruce and Paul (Irene); daughter Dayle (Gary) Robertson; grandchildren: Stephen (Gwen), Michael, Sarah and Melissa; great grandchildren Abigayle and Benjamin. Bob is predeceased by his parents, Phyllis and Leslie “Pat” Hoadley; brothers Don Hoadley and Al Boult and daughter-in-law Muriel.
Bob had many part time jobs as a boy growing up notably as a “call boy” for the T.H. &B. (Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo) Railway. He began working at Dofasco (Dominion Foundries & Steel) while still in his teens but moved on to Stelco (Steel Co. of Canada) to take advantage of their apprenticeship program in Industrial Instrumentation.
In Hamilton, he rowed for the Leander Boat Club and was awarded a City of Hamilton ring to commemorate his coaching of three Canadian rowing champions.
The family moved to Port Alberni (Sproat Lake) in 1966 after Bob was hired in Hamilton to work for the MacMillan Bloedel Pulp Mill as an instrument mechanic. They lived at Bishops Landing until completing their home on Faber Road.
Bob was briefly involved with the Boy Scout movement but spent many hours and effort with the Pulp & Sulphite Union. He was a school trustee for School District #70 (Port Alberni) from 1973 – 1988 with 4 years as Chairman of the Board. He was also a member of the BCSTA (BC School Trustee Assoc.). Bob retired at the age of 60 and spent many happy hours sailing “Cloud 9” on Sproat Lake and enjoying many exciting travels with Diane.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, May 13, 2013 at the Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 4005-6th Ave., Port Alberni, BC. Cremation has taken place.
