Joseph was born in Gyor, Hungary on February 18, 1942. Joseph and his family immigrated to Canada in November 1956 and settled in Saskatoon in 1957.
As a young man Joe worked at the Saskatoon Bessborough Hotel as a chef and meat cutter. It was there that he met Teresa Fele. They married and had two children, Julie and Anthony. After his wife's passing in 1968, Joe moved to Victoria, BC. where he found work in the mill industry. He and his second wife had a daughter, Jeanne, and later moved to Port Alberni, BC. where Joe worked at the Somass Mill for many years. Years after his divorce, Joe met and eventually married Helen Clouthier. After the Somass Mill shut down Joe worked for Somass Roofing until his retirement in 2006. Joe was a quiet-natured man who loved his life on the island and especially enjoyed the mild winters which were similar to the winters of Hungary. He had a great sense of humor and was always eager to share his jokes. He was a very good cook, Chicken Paprikash being one of his specialties. One of Joe's greatest joys was dancing and he so enjoyed meeting with his friends to socialize and dance weekly at the Legion.
Joe is survived by his children: Julie Zekonic (Vince), Anthony Nemeth (Vivian), Jeanne Stanicky (Rob); his grandchildren: Tanner, Taylor, Mia, Talia, Sydney, Zack; his many nieces and nephews; Helen's children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; his many friends.
The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at West Coast General Hospital for their kind and loving care for Joe in his last days.
Joseph will be laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery, Port Alberni, BC.
On November 2, 2023 at 1:00pm – 2:30pm a celebration of Joe's life will be held at the Chapel of Memories Funeral Home at 4005 Sixth Ave. Port Alberni, BC.
