Gary's family moved to Port Alberni in 1962 and he spent most of his life in Port, except for a short stint in Calgary in the early 1980's and Wells, BC in the early 1990's. The oldest of four siblings he was the lucky one to take accordion lessons and became an accomplished player. Gary worked for Katila's, the Alberni Co-op (back when it was located on Johnson Road) and after that Budget Car Rentals on 3rd Ave. In his younger days Gary spent lots of time down the canal and at the many lakes in the area fishing with family and friends. Gary had a love of books and was an avid reader throughout his life, as well he would never turn down an opportunity for a game of cribbage.
He is predeceased by his parents William and Joan Hipwell and brother Bruce.
He is survived by his brothers Mark (Khanh), Dan (Cheryl) and sister Jo-Anne (Roger) and numerous nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at WCGH for their support.
In our hearts together until we meet again.
