Ernie was born in Nipawin Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm. After his father passed away in a terrible tragedy Ernie at the age of 16 decided to stay and work by transforming the family farm into grain crops. In the fall of 1951 he came to Port Alberni for the first time and found work at Woodward's. Every spring he would go back home to farming and return to Alberni in the fall. He had to find a job every time he came back to town including work at the plywood mill, Franklin River logging camp, and Somass mill. He worked as a millwright until his retirement in 1992. Ernie had lots of things to do not only raising their family he was also active working as a negotiator for the union. He held several positions as an IWA executive from 1964 to 1992 and was also on the Labour Council. He also gave back to the community as he was on the Board of Directors for the Alberni Valley Senior Citizens for 33 years and during his mandate as President the construction of the new cottages on 10th Avenue was possible. Volunteering was his pleasure.
